3 Reasons to Skip the Oscars this Year

The Academy Awards are just around the corner! Under normal circumstances, I’d be waiting for the telecast with bated breath. This year – not so much. My thoughts? Anybody read War and Peace lately? Umm, how about those NE Patriots? Here are 3 reasons to skip the Oscars this year:

  • Ellen DeGeneres Isn’t Hosting – That’s a wrap! She was so hilarious last year – the jokes, the epic selfie – she absolutely killed it! It’ll be extremely hard for Doogie Howser, M.D. to top Ellen’s performance.
  • Diversity – You might be living under a rock if you haven’t heard the big ruckus about the lack of diversity represented in this year’s nominees. No black actors were nominated in the acting categories  – something that hasn’t happened in almost twenty years. In addition, there were opportunities to recognize the brilliant work of female directors this year in the Best Director category, but that didn’t happen. Why is that? There is an obvious need to diversify the Oscar voting block so that it’s more representative and inclusive. The film industry caters to a wide audience represented by a richly diverse mixture of gender, age, race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, religion, and so many other unique fabrics of life. I’m hopeful that the Academy membership and Oscar nominating process will one day reflect that same level of diversity.
  • No BrangelinAniston Encounter – Now, let’s transition to something completely mindless and solely based on my own selfish desires –  Jennifer Aniston, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie all in the same room. There was lots of speculation that Jennifer might get an Oscar nod for her role in the dark comedy, Cake. Yes, you read that correctly – the words Jennifer Aniston and Oscar in the same sentence – lol. Kudos to Jen for taking a chance and challenging her skill set. It paid off because she absolutely nailed it! Angie received early Oscar buzz for Unbroken, the biographical World War II drama she directed. To make a long story short – both ladies got snubbed which means we have to wait until the next lunar eclipse for a BrangelinAniston sighting – bummer!

What do you think about this year’s Oscars telecast?  Will you be watching?
