First, Amber Rose and Wiz Khalifa announce their split and now Jordin Sparks and Jason Derulo are throwing the deuces…I just can’t…it’s all too much!

For those of you who are pop culture addicts like me, you may have already noticed a few interesting trends that precede a celebrity break-up. In hindsight, we should have known all along, right? Here are 5 Signs a Celebrity Couple is Headed for Splitsville:

  1. Speed Dating: It’s rarely a good idea to jump into a committed relationship after only knowing someone for a few weeks – ESPECIALLY when you’re a celebrity. Are the emotions that drive a couple to jump in head first, the same emotions that ultimately lead to their demise? Maybe we should ask Lamar Odom and Khloe Kardashian. They dated a whopping 30 days or so before they married. Nick Cannon and Mariah also famously courted about a month before saying “I Do”. Was this “microwave dating” approach a factor in their break-ups? Who knows…but, either way, it’s never a bad idea to let love marinate a little while before walking down the aisle – or tattooing your new boo’s name on your body (wink).
  2. Are They or Aren’t They?: Some celebrity couples work overtime to keep their relationships private. To a certain extent, this makes sense because the fish bowl of peering eyes can be overwhelming to new lovebirds. However, when a celebrity couple goes out of their way not to be photographed together in public or refuses to publicly acknowledge the relationship – even after dating for a while – you can start placing your bets on the timing of the inevitable split. Does the effort required to maintain that level of privacy start to eat away at the energy needed to sustain the relationship? Maybe Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin, or Giselle Bündchen and Leonardo DiCaprio can shed light on that. Both ex-couples notoriously avoided joint public appearances – until right before they called it quits. Interesting…
  3. TMI All Day – “Hey Everybody, We’re In Love!”: It’s never a good idea to talk too much about your love life in interviews or on social media. Over exposure tends to be the kiss of death for celebrity couples. If I had $5 for every sweet tweet or Instagram message sent by Amber Rose and Wiz Khalifa professing their love for one another, I’d have enough to buy myself a nice new pair of Christian Louboutin shoes. Balance is always key. Case in point – Beyoncé and Jay Z are typically tight-lipped about their relationship, but they’ve managed to share just enough to respect the transparency the public craves while also maintaining a reasonable amount of privacy.
  4. The Left-Hand Obsession: Am I the only one that notices when married celebs go out of their way to show their left hand in paparazzi photos while rumors are swirling about the state of their union? They either want you to see that they’re still wearing the ring or they want you to see that they’re not – either way, it adds up to trouble.
  5. Reality TV Curse: Ok, this one ought to be a no-brainer by now, but some celebrity couples never learn – tisk tisk. Starring in a reality television show with your significant other is the shortest path to splitsville – whether you’re already famous or not. Reality shows are turning into one big romance graveyard full of regret, attorney’s fees and divorce papers that say “irreconcilable differences”. Kris and Bruce Jenner, Khloe and Lamar, Kate and Jon Gosselin, Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey, Linda and Hulk Hogan, Porsha Williams and Kordell Stewart – the list goes on and on and on…
