We are honored to feature former 8-time NBA All-Star Dikembe Mutombo and the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation in the “Benevolent Baller Spotlight” for the month of September!

All too often, we’re inundated with negative images of sports figures in the press. However, we believe it’s important to add balance by showcasing athletes who actively strive to be great role models and give back to their communities. It was in this spirit that the “Benevolent Baller Spotlight” was launched on CHITCHAT RUNWAY.

Dikembe, a native of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, has dedicated his life to serving the community and giving back to others. The Dikembe Mutombo Foundation (DMF), founded in 1997 in Atlanta, is focused on “improving the health, education and quality of life for the people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Foundation strives to accomplish this goal through an emphasis on primary health care and disease prevention, the promotion of health policy, health research and increased access to health care education for the people of the Congo.” (www.dmf.org)

The DMF proudly opened the Biamba Marie Mutombo Hospital, in 2007, in the Congolese capital of Kinshasa. The hospital, named after Dikembe’s mother, “has a capacity of close to 150 beds and it is supported by a state of the art emergency room, an intensive care unit, a well stocked pharmacy, and a modern radiology department.” (www.dmf.org)

Check out Dikembe’s feature on the CHITCHAT RUNWAY sidebar for the rest of September.

Way to go, Dikembe!
